Social Worker Career in Illinois - IL

Social work careers are unique in that they use methods of communication and interpersonal exploration to treat unhealthy conditions of the mind. By beginning a social worker career in Illinois, you are making a significant contribution to the quality of life for patients that cannot live their lives normally because of a mental health condition.

In 2008, a study conducted found that approximately 37.5% of Illinois residents suffered from a poor mental condition, which is substantially higher than the 33.3% national average. This type of trend is what creates the growing demand for social work professionals in Illinois. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work professions in Illinois are likely to increase by an average of 16% over the next 8 years, much faster than the average of 9% for most other professions.

The Illinois Division of Professional Regulation handles all licensing of social workers. You can choose to pursue one of these licensed titles:

  • Social Worker (SW)
  • Clinical Social Worker (CSW)

Because professional experience is the best way to develop a successful social work career, all students in Illinois must complete an internship training program. Social workers (SW) must complete no less than 3 years’ supervised experience. Clinical social workers (CSW) need to have at least 3,000 hours of training.

Disclaimer: Program outcomes vary according to each institution's specific curriculum, and employment opportunities are not guaranteed.
