Social Worker Career in New Jersey - NJ

In New Jersey, there are two classifications of social workers: a licensed social worker and a licensed clinical social worker. Licensed social workers (LSW) are those who have a social work master degree (MSW) and have passed the masters level examination given by the Association of Social Work Boards, but have no experience. Licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) have the master degree, passed the clinical exam given by the Association of Social Work Boards, and also have two years of full-time experience under the instruction of a licensed clinical social worker. When considering social work careers, remember that LCSWs can do more clinical work than LSWs and have more job opportunities.

Here is how to become a social worker in New Jersey (LCSW):

  1. Receive an MSW (master in social work) from a school that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Certain course requirements must also be met in or in addition to your training program.
  2. Take and pass the masters level examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.
  3. Fill out the application for Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in New Jersey and pay the application fee.
  4. Work for at least two years in a full-time clinical capacity under the supervision of an LCSW in New Jersey. This must entail 1920 hours of face-to-face client contact.
  5. Take and pass the clinical examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.
  6. Fill out the application for Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Jersey (LCSW) and pay the application fee.
