Healthcare administrators or healthcare executives, sometimes referred to as medical and health services managers, may be in charge of an entire healthcare facility or an individual department. These are the executives who strategize, manage and facilitate the delivery of healthcare by the healthcare enterprise.
The State of South Carolina’s department of labor‘s statistics show that for 2006, there were 3,580 jobs for medical and health services managers. For 2016, this number is projected to rise to 4,100, an increase of 520 jobs and a 15 percent rise in employment. Roper Hospital, Palmetto Health, Providence Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina are some of the institutions that employ those in healthcare management.
Additionally, for those who are interested in management careers in the medical field, the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) Health Careers Program is a cooperative effort of several South Carolina universities and teaching hospitals that is established to raise the number of South Carolina students who chose to enter professions in health care. The organization may be able to provide information and resources to prospective students in South Carolina. The state also has a health career education resources database with information about agencies and organizations that help minorities and under-served South Carolina residents who may be considering careers in healthcare.
