It will take you from nine months to one year to complete training for entry-level billing and coding positions, and two years to four years for more comprehensive training for specialized billing and coding positions in the medical field. After nine months to a year of training through medical coding schools in South Carolina, you will earn a certificate or diploma. Two years of training commonly earns you an associate degree. Four years will garner you a Bachelor's degree. This degree opens up the most career options in the medical coding and billing field, including health information management and health administration positions. Training programs are available online and in colleges and universities.

Some of the things you will cover in your training include Current Procedural Terminology, or CPT; Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, or HCPCS; and International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification, or ICD-9-CM. All of these classification systems are used to bill medical services given by professionals to Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies. Certification exams will test your knowledge of codes, functions, terminology, and more.

Once you earn your certification, make sure to file for renewal when the time comes, and to earn any continuing education credits necessary to maintain certification.
