South Carolina Pharmacy Tech Certificate – SC

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in South Carolina

While South Carolina does have state licensure guidelines, it does not have state-specific guidelines for accreditation of South Carolina pharmacy technician certification programs.  The state follows the guidelines set out by the American Society for Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).  As long as you ensure the online program you choose for your training has accreditation by the ASHP you can feel confident that the training will be accepted by the state as sufficient.  You will need a high school diploma or equivalent before beginning a South Carolina pharmacy technician certification program.  This training generally takes one to two years to complete.

Once your training is complete, you will need to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam and secure an additional 1000 hours of practice under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.  Licensure is not needed to start working as you will have to complete work to prove you have 1000 hours of experience beyond school, but in order to advance and seek out the best pharmacy technician positions it is critical to have current state licensure.

Steps to Becoming a Pharmacy Technician in South Carolina

  1.  Receive a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Complete an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  3. Take and pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam.
  4. Register with the State of South Carolina as a pharmacy technician, supplying all required documentation and fees.
  5. Complete a minimum of 1000 hours of on-the-job experience under the supervision of a certified pharmacist.
  6. Send all verifying documentation of completion of the previous steps along with a completed application for licensure in the state of South Carolina as well as any applicable fees.
  7. Following these steps will pave the way for beginning a career as a pharmacy technician in South Carolina.
