How to Become a Radiology Tech in South Carolina - SC

Not all states require state licensure for radiology technician to legally practice. However, as a result of the Medical Radiation Health and Safety Act of 2000, the South Carolina State Board of Health now demands that radiology technicians register and receive state license certificates through the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association (SCRQSA).

Radiology technicians applying for a South Carolina state license are only eligible if they are nationally certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) as registered technicians (RTs). Applicants for certification must pass ARRT standards in ethics, education and examination.

Applicants must pass a criminal background check. Applicants must show proof of having completed a formal South Carolina radiology tech training program, program in another state, or online program within the last five years from the date of application. Formal education programs must be radiology specific and be accredited by either the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology (JRCERT) or the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Formal education programs must include clinical coursework that demonstrates procedural competency and patient care activities. These programs can offer an associate’s, baccalaureate and master’s degree levels of education. The Armed Forces also provide accredited formal education programs that satisfy ARRT criteria.

Applicants must successfully pass ARRT examination in radiology technician. The examination covers subjects in:

  • Protective measures used in radiation
  • Proper operation of medical equipment
  • Aspects in quality control measures
  • Producing and evaluating images
  • Procedures used in radiography
  • Patient care responsibilities and interaction
