The first step towards getting a gerontology degree in South Dakota is to find an online or campus-based school offering programs that match your goals. There are several of both types in the state, with colleges and universities offering a more traditional education.  Online schools are fast becoming the norm for this degree due to their flexibility, convenience, and wide range of educational options.

Depending on the level of education you desire, you might find yourself going to school for a few months, two or three years, or even longer. You can get an associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s of gerontology in South Dakota.

Though every program is somewhat different, a general gerontology program in South Dakota usually follows the same curriculums. You’ll begin with well-rounded education in science, math, English and communication. Eventually, your studies will begin to narrow to topics focusing on the effects of aging on the human body, and nutritional, social, and physiological factors affecting the elderly.

Because gerontology is merely the name for a wide range of disciplines, at some point you’ll begin taking classes more specific to your chosen career. Caregivers will learn about the specific of diagnosing, treating, and working with the elderly. Counselors and program developers will learn how to help people cope with age related disorders, mental illnesses, and death.

Depending on what level of education you hope to achieve, you may find yourself required to complete internship opportunities, which are not always necessary in this profession, but are a great idea for anyone in any allied health career. You might find yourself assisting licensed nurses in treating the elderly at Sanford USD Medical Center, or part of a team counseling people on how to deal with signs of dementia in their parents at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Likewise, different degrees prepare you for different levels of work, care, and responsibility. The great thing about being a part of such a diverse profession, however, is that you’ll always be able to find schools specializing in what you want to learn, and in South Dakota, you’ll find a wide array of career opportunities awaiting you after graduation.
