By an allied health world contributing writerPublished: July 14th, 2010
A successful healthcare administrator or medical and health services manager must have a thorough understanding of health care delivery, current trends in health care and ethical issues, reimbursement and payment processes, regulations, compliance demands, standards, quality assurance and accreditation. What is the education path for a healthcare management degree in South Dakota? Students must have a bachelor’s degree at the minimum and preferably possess a master’s degree or a doctoral degree in health science, public health, long-term care administration, health services administration, public health administration or business administration.
The curriculum for an advanced degree in health services administration typically includes the following: business finance; business statistics; information systems for business professionals; legal environment for healthcare; organizational behavior and theory; marketing; human resource management; business policy and strategy; health service systems; gerontology and long term care; health care law; health services management and epidemiology health services financing; policy and administration; economics. A practicum, which may or not be paid, where a student is supervised while they apply their classroom learning is also an important part of most programs.
South Dakota has four technical institutes and six public colleges or universities, many offering bachelors and master’s degrees in health care studies appropriate to a degree in healthcare administration. Many of these programs also offer distance education and online learning alternatives for students interested in pursuing this learning option through the Electronic University Consortium (EUC) of South Dakota, an initiative of the South Dakota Board of Regents.
