Nicknamed the “Mount Rushmore State” for the awe-inspiring presidential memorial carved into a granite mountain nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, South Dakota is home to more than 812,000 residents (up nearly 8% since April of 2000), according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 2009 population estimate. With a population density just below 12 persons per square mile, South Dakota ranks as one of the least crowded states in America.

Whether you want the amenities of the cities or yearn for the great outdoors and wide-open spaces, South Dakota is an obvious choice.
