Students spend two and a half to three years earning a Master's degree in Physician Assistant programs in South Dakota, following a curriculum that balances theory and practice. Students devote their first 14 months in their theory classes, taking courses in human anatomy, embryology, physiology, clinical medicine, and a Master's project. The remaining 14 months consists of four rotations in different areas of medicine and classes in psychiatry, surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, gynecology, emergency medicine, and elective courses.

Once Physician Assistants become certified, they have to maintain their certification by taking classes and attending seminars or conferences through NCCPA-approved organizations. Applicants must gain a total of 100 hours before the end of their licensing period. The National Commission on Certifying Physician Assistants (NCCPA), American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians (AAPFP), American Osteopathic Association Committee on Continuing Medical Education (AOACCME), or a university recognized by the NCCPA are excellent resources for continuing medical education.
