Steps to Become A Speech Language Pathologist in West Virginia

  1. High school diploma or GED

    It goes without saying that you will need your high school diploma to be admitted for training as a speech therapist.

  2. Enroll in one of the West Virginia speech pathology graduate programs after earning a bachelor’s degree

    Expect to spend about six years in school pursuing an SLP career.  The first four years will be spent earning a bachelor’s degree, and the last two will be spent completing a master’s program.

  3. Obtain your professional license and credentials

The West Virginia Board of Examiners of Speech and Language Pathology administers the professional license for speech language pathologists in the state and has stringent requirements for licensing.

In order to be eligible to apply for your professional state license, you must have a master's degree in speech language pathology from an educational institution approved by the State Board, and you must have completed your clinical practicum.  Pursuant to this, aspiring SLPS in West Virginia must pass the national examination approved by ASLHA.  Once issued, the state license is valid for two years, and then must be renewed.
