Speech-Language Pathologist Education in Iowa

The ideal situation for a student in Iowa is to begin preparing to become a speech language pathologist during their high school years.  It is important for the student to maintain his grade average as high as possible and especially in science classes.  Biology and anatomy are the most important classes that can be taken during high school.  The student should take advantage of these years and volunteer to work with a speech pathologist or with people who have different types of speech disorders.
Upon completion of high school, a four year Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from a four year university is the next step that students in Iowa must take.  Most students major in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Special Education since both majors deal with speech problems.
In Iowa, students may expect to take the following classes in their undergraduate studies:

  • Developmental language disorders
  • Aural Rehabilitation
  • Statistics
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Clinical Audiology
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism
  • Oral Communication for the Professional World
  • Educational Psychology

Students in Iowa will complete a minimum of 300 hours of clinical work during graduate programs offered online or through campus based speech pathology schools in Iowa.  They will also take classes such as:

  • Foundation of Clinical Practices
  • Principles of Voice Production
  • Language Disorders in Children
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Swallowing Disorders
  • Stuttering
  • Communication Disorders and Aging
Through campus or online programs, aspiring Speech Pathologists in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Iowa may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Iowa Health and University of Iowa Hospital.
