Kentucky Speech/Language Pathologist Education

Training programs offered by Speech Pathology schools in Kentucky includes both classroom learning and fieldwork. During a bachelor’s program, which typically lasts about four years, an SLP student will learn the basics of normal human anatomy, communication, and language. Undergrad work will also include some clinical experience and shadowing. Next, a two-year master’s program will include course work detailing how to diagnose and treat speech and language disorders as well as more clinical training. SLPs who choose to pursue a position as a scholar, researcher, or professor in the field may opt for a four-year doctoral program in lieu of a master’s degree.

In Kentucky, an SLP must renew his or her license with the Board annually at a fee of $150. Renewal notices are sent out each Fall, and fees are due on or before January 31 of each year. Licensees may renew via U.S. mail or by using the Online License Renewal and Verification System at www.slp.ky.gov. A newly licensed pathologist is not required to log continuing education credits during the first renewal period; however, after the first renewal period, Kentucky SLPs must have minimum of 15 continuing education credits from an accredited institution each year.
