Speech-Language Pathologist Education in Maryland

Online and campus based speech pathology schools in Maryland consistently rank as some of the better institutions for the speech-language pathologist profession. Undergraduates are strongly encouraged to take physical and biological science classes as well as having a background in psychology. A 3.5 GPA or higher is required for those who wish to move onto to the graduate level.

With a master’s in speech-language pathology being a prerequisite for licensing in the state of Maryland, there is a high demand and an even higher level of competition in the graduate programs that are offered within the state. Most programs contain two years worth of courses with an option for either a thesis or non-thesis based curriculum. These programs also contain clinical work, which satisfy the one-year supervised clinical practicum under the state of Maryland’s licensing guidelines.

To apply for a license within the state of Maryland, students must complete one year of a postgraduate supervised practice. This can be done while in the process of taking the
national exam in Speech-Language Pathology, commonly called the Praxis II.

For those who already have a license, 20 CEU’s are required to renew a license. A CEU is the equivalent of a unit. There is a two-year time span to take the 20 CEU’s.

Licenses are renewed every two years. There is a continuing education requirement of 20 units. Those who have dual licenses are required to have 30 units. Units are not carried over into new license cycles. The board may waive the continuing education units if the licensee is coming in from another state with a similar cycle.

Through campus or online programs, aspiring Speech Pathologists in Baltimore, Columbia, Silver Spring and Ellicot City, Maryland may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Franklin Square Hospital Center, Holy Cross Hospital, John Hopkins Medicine and Prince George’s Hospital Center.
