Education for Speech and Language Pathologists in New Mexico

Those who wish to become licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the state of New Mexico must receive their Master's or Doctoral degree in a speech/language/communications-related field. This program can take from three to six years total, and admission to such a program usually requires prior coursework or a Bachelor's degree in a speech/language/communications-related field. Both brick-and-mortar schools and online institutions provide programs in Speech-Language Pathology.  All successful careers begin with either online or campus based speech pathology schools in New Mexico.

A Clinical Practicum is also completed while still a student, usually for a minimum of 375 hours. This fulfills degree requirements and also the ASHA's requirement to receive a CCC. It is also a requirement to become licensed in New Mexico.

A year-long clinical fellowship, usually full-time and under the supervision of a professional who already holds a CCC, is also required.

Passing the national Praxis II exam is the next step to becoming a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in New Mexico.  You should be well-prepared to pass this exam after receiving your graduate degree and your CCC.

Once licensed, 20 clock hours of Continuing Education must be reported with your renewal every two years.
