New York Speech Language Pathology Schools - NY

The ability to communicate on a personal level with others is a basic part of our nature.  For those who have difficulty speaking, a speech language pathologist (therapist) can be a vital source of help.  Almost half of the jobs for speech therapists are in elementary and secondary education, making therapists even more important as they can ease some of the developmental issues experienced by some children.  In New York State, speech pathology has been a particularly popular and lucrative occupation.  New York has the third highest concentration of speech therapists in the United States.  There are over 10,000 speech therapists in New York, a 27% increase since 1999.  Salaries for speech therapists in New York State have also increase by 43% since 1999.

New York Speech Language Pathologist Education

Almost all states, including New York, require that speech therapists have a master’s degree in speech language pathology.  Therefore, students should begin their post secondary educations with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in communication science or in one of the biological sciences.  There are some schools that offer a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology; however, these are rare, and usually not required to ultimately work toward a graduate degree.  The coursework offered during graduate studies through speech pathology schools in New York will include anatomy and physiology, as well as specialized classes that deal with parts of the body used during communication.  Speech language pathologists also aid patients who have trouble swallowing, so some component of the education will probably cover some of the medical reasons why patients would have trouble in this area and how to treat any associated disorders.  Communication disorders can also be psychological, so some specialized education in psychology may also be required.

There are about 30 colleges and universities in the state of New York that offer graduate education programs in speech language pathology.  Before enrolling in a graduate program, students are encouraged to make sure that the school is accredited by The Council on Academic Accreditation, which is associated with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  A degree from an accredited graduate program is required for licensure.

New York State has some specific educational requirements for speech language pathology programs.  Coursework must include 12 hours of communication processes, six hours in language, six hours in audiology, 12 additional hours in speech language pathology, and 18 additional hours in related areas.  The practicum must be at least 400 hours.  One hundred fifty of those hours must be at the graduate level and 20 to 50 hours must be in audiology.

Continuing Education and Licensure Renewal for New York Speech Language Pathologists

Speech therapists in New York must renew their licenses every three years.  During those three years they must complete 30 hours of continuing competency activities.  Twenty of these hours must be in a professional area such as treatment of hearing, language, or swallowing disorders.  The other ten hours can be in related activities dealing with regulatory issues, business practices, and other topics specific to practicing speech language pathology.

Through campus or online programs, aspiring Speech Pathologists in New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse, New York may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Presbyterian Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital.
