Speech Pathology Schools in Ohio - OH

An extensive education is required of speech-language pathologists in Ohio. Aspiring speech-language pathologists must complete graduate coursework and clinical practicum at accredited schools and programs. In Ohio, speech-language pathologists must obtain a master’s degree.

The first step to becoming a licensed speech-language pathologist in Ohio is to earn a bachelor’s degree in communications and disorders, or a related field. Once you receive this degree, you must enter and complete a two-year speech-language pathology graduate program to receive your master’s degree.

For enhanced job opportunities, speech-language pathologists in Ohio have the option of expanding their education by completing a four-year doctoral degree in this field. This degree is generally required in Ohio in order to perform in-depth research in a specific area.

Here is a breakdown of speech-language pathology education requirements in Ohio:

  1. A master’s degree earned online or through campus based speech pathology schools in Ohio(75 semester hours)
  2. Clinical practicum (375 hours)
  3. Written proof of the completion of nine-full time professional postgraduate experience or a minimum of 30 hours per week of professional postgraduate experience for at least 36 weeks.

Continuing Education Requirements: Speech-Language Pathologist in Ohio

Speech-language pathologist licensees in Ohio need to earn at least 20 hours of continuing education credits every two years to receive a license renewal. The actual contact hours that are spent in a continuing education environment can be used toward these 20 credit hours by the OBSLPA. (Please note that lunches, breaks, and other daily interruptions will not be counted toward these continuing education hours.) An example of hours that will count toward continuing education includes attending a three-hour presentation on the subject of speech-language pathology.

Of these 20 credit hours, ten of the hours must be applied to clinical practice in the area in which the person is licensed. The other ten hours can be obtained in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, or both.

By Jan. 31 of every other year, the OBSLPA will charge a license renewal fee to each licensee. The fee amount will be determined by the OBSLPA on an individual basis.

Note: These continuing education hours are mandatory at each license renewal except at the first renewal.
