Alaska has the fifth highest overweight obesity rate in the United States, per information provided by statemaster.com. It only stands to reason, then, that sports medicine would be a profession that is in great need in Alaska. There are schools and colleges in Alaska in addition to online programs that offer degrees in various disciplines contained within the arena of sports medicine, such as physical therapy, fitness training, and physical therapy assisting.
Undergraduate degrees are sufficient for some careers in sports medicine, such as physical therapist assistant or fitness trainer. Candidates for other sports medicine careers must have a graduate degree, including those of physical therapist and occupational therapist.
With 59.5% of Alaska’s population qualifying as being overweight or obese, the need for sports medicine practitioners is great within the state. Jobs for sports medicine professionals exist across Alaska in cities including Sitka, Fairbanks, Juneau and Anchorage, and in medical facilities like Central Peninsula Regional Hospital, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Alaska Regional Hospital and Providence Alaska Medical Center. In addition, there are many rural, outlying areas of Alaska that are probably underserved by sports medicine practitioners.
