Become a Substance Abuse Counselor in Delaware - DE

Anyone hoping to become a substance abuse counselor in Delaware should consult the regulations and requirements set forth by the Division of Professional Regulation of the Delaware Department of State.  It is not necessary for a substance abuse counselor in Delaware to become certified or licensed as long as that individual does not misrepresent his or her experience and credentials to current patients and potential clientele.  However, only certified and licensed chemical dependency professionals will have access to the best career opportunities, including positions at top-notch medical facilities throughout the state, such as Christiana Hospital in Newark, Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, and Kent General Hospital in Dover.

Delaware offers aspiring substance abuse counselors the opportunity to become certified drug and alcohol counselors or certified associate addiction counselors.  Certification requires 270 hours of education in counseling-related subjects, 300 hours of supervised clinical training, and passage of a computerized certification examination.  Certification candidates must also have significant work experience in the field of substance abuse.  The number of hours required varies depending on the candidate’s education level, ranging from 6000 hours for those with no degree to 2000 to those holding a master’s degree.  Licensure as a chemical dependency professional in Delaware is available only to certified drug and alcohol counselors and requires a master’s degree or higher.
