Become a Substance Abuse Counselor in Georgia - GA

Do you plan to become a substance abuse counselor in Georgia?  If so, then you have chosen a difficult but ultimately very rewarding profession to pursue.  Substance abuse counselors work closely with addicted individuals as they negotiate perhaps the most significant crisis of their lives.  Being a successful substance abuse counselor requires both people skills and scientific and medical know-how.  It requires being adaptable and the ability to think on your feet.  Most of all, it requires compassion for the patients who come to you for help.  In Georgia, substance abuse counselors are certified by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Certification Board of Georgia.  Certification is voluntary, but is generally a prerequisite for advancement within the field of substance abuse counseling.

Becoming a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Georgia requires a minimum of two years or 4000 hours of work experience in a clinical setting.  It also requires a minimum of 270 hours of education in subject areas directly related to substance abuse counseling, as well as 300 hours of supervised practical training.  To become certified, you will also have to pass a certification exam. Certification will open up to you a myriad of opportunities to work in the best healthcare institutions in Georgia, including Atlanta Medical Center and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, and Dekalb Medical at North Decatur.
