Become a Substance Abuse Counselor in Michigan - MI

According to the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth the number of substance abuse counselors working statewide will increase from 1,561 in 2006 to 1,966 in 2016. This occupational outlook equates to an astounding 25.6% employment growth, so professionals can expect at least 72 new job positions to open up each year. Those interested in beginning a long-lasting career in substance abuse counseling will need to prepare by gaining education, training, work experience, and certification prior to employment.

The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals is the regulating force behind substance abuse counselors in the state. In order to earn the title of certified addiction counselor (CAC), students and professionals alike must first satisfy all eligibility requirements. For example, all substance abuse counselors must complete 270 hours of education, 6,000 hours of part-time or full-time work experience (volunteer or paid), and 300 hours of supervised practical training in substance abuse counseling. Also, a written examination administered must be successfully passed before licensing is granted. The initial application fee is $150. Once licensed, substance abuse counselors must complete either 20 hours every year, or 40 hours every two years in continuing education activities. Finally, all substance abuse counselors must live and work in Michigan at least 51% of the time to maintain an occupational license.
