Helping people addicted to legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or both, substance abuse counselors provide support, advice, and trained counseling. They work with physicians and the community to help re-integrate former addicts into society. Due to the confidential nature of the profession, substance abuse counselors need specialized training in most states, including New Hampshire. Substance abuse counselor certification in New Hampshire is essential in order to be qualified to work within the state.

To become a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in New Hampshire, you must have at least 270 hours of specialized training; 300 hours of supervised practical training; and 6000 hours of supervised alcohol and drug work experience. To earn your license in New Hampshire, you must also pass an oral and written International Certification Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Inc. (ICRC) exam. In addition, you must prepare a case presentation which is used as the basis for an oral interview. Once all of the criteria are met, you will be issued your LADC, entitling you to work as a substance abuse counselor in New Hampshire.
