This is one of the most demanding, and at times one of the most rewarding, positions in the mental health field. In North Dakota, as in most states in the United States, one must be properly trained and certified to be qualified to work as a substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse counselor certification in North Dakota is granted through the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counseling Examiners (NDBACE).
To be certified as a Licensed Addiction Counselor in North Dakota, one must have at least a bachelor degree, with at least 32 credit hours in courses relating to addiction studies. An applicant also must have participated in a full-time training practicum of 1400 hours lasting approximately nine months. Both oral and written examinations must be passed in order to meet the criteria for becoming certified. One must have completed all necessary coursework before applying to take the examination. Examinations are held at the Examiners’ main office in Bismarck four times each year. The fee to take the examination is $110.
