Become a Substance Abuse Counselor in South Carolina - SC

Substance abuse counselor certification in South Carolina is awarded by the South Carolina Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (SCAADAC). The goal of this organization is to evaluate the knowledge and skills of applicants through structured testing measurements.

In South Carolina, substance abuse counselors are certified on two levels: Certified Addictions Counselor I and Certified Addictions Counselor II. Because you are new to this profession, the first credential you will work toward is the Level I credential. In order to qualify for this level of certification, you must have or do the following:

  • Bachelor degree
  • 4,000 clinical working experience
  • 150 hours supervised clinical working experience
  • Passage of written and oral examinations

The Level II certification includes most of the same requirements with the exception of 8,000 clinical working hours’ experience. It is important to understand that certification is used as a means of conveying to patients that you are competent as a substance abuse counselor and can be trusted to treat them.

This is a great time to get involved in the substance abuse counseling field in South Carolina. In 2008, the Bureau of Labor Statistics conducted a survey study which revealed that approximately 21% more substance abuse counselors will be needed in South Carolina through the year 2018. Nationally, substance abuse counselors held about 86,000 jobs in 2008. The projected increase should add an additional 18,000 jobs, which is plenty of room for you to make your way into this field.
