Become a Substance Abuse Counselor in Texas - TX

If you are interested in learning how to become a substance abuse counselor in Texas, then you should learn a bit about the licensing/certification process. Substance abuse counselor certification in Texas is regulated by the Department of State Health Services – Community Mental Health branch (DSHS).

In Texas, counselors treating mental health and addiction issues are referred to as Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC). Before you can apply for certification as an LCDC, you must complete the following:

  • Registration as a Counselor Intern (CI)
  • An associate degree in human behavior
  • Work at least 4,000 hours in a clinical setting treating chemically dependent patients
  • Pass both the written and oral examination

Most states require a bachelor or master degree in order to be certifiable. However, the State of Texas is different in that the 4,000-hour work requirement can be waived for professionals holding a bachelor degree or higher. If you have an associate degree, you must complete the 4,000 hours of supervised work in order to be issued LCDC status.

In Texas, substance abuse counseling is a growing field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 21% more substance abuse counselors will be in demand by the year 2018. Because treatment for mental health illnesses and substance abuse issues is becoming more readily available, counselors in Texas can expect to see an increased demand for their services.
