Becoming a substance abuse counselor in Wyoming starts with satisfying an array of educational requirements along with integrated training. According to the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board, requirements for a Substance Abuse Counselor consists of:

  •  Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree in a mental health discipline that consists of 21 semester hours with a focus in chemical dependency, addictionology, or substance abuse from an accredited educational institution that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

  • 3,000 minimum hour of clinical training/work experience in addiction counseling under the specific supervision of a designated and distinguished clinical professional
  •  Satisfactory completion of a current National Certified Addictions Counselor Level II (NCAC II) certification examination. Three chances to pass the examination are allotted and the organization providing the examination will finalize the marks for a satisfactory score.
  • All 3,000 training hours under the focused attention of a clinical supervisor need to be completed after the awarding of the master’s degree.  Twelve hundred hours of the 3,000 hours will establish direct counselor to client interaction.
  • A minimum of 100-post master’s hours of one-on-one clinical supervision with a designated qualified clinical supervisor is required.

In Wyoming, substance abuse professionals must also provide three recommendations from professionals that commend the individual’s ability to perform as an addiction counselor.
