The counseling tech is an entry-level certification offered by the Alaska Commission for Behavioral Health Certification (http://www.akcertification.org/index.html). Along with your educational courses you are required to complete a 100-hour practicum under the supervision of a certified chemical dependency counselor.
Besides the entry-level counseling tech, you can increase your education and training in order to qualify for Chemical Dependency Counselor I (CDCI), Chemical Dependency Counselor II (CDCII), Chemical Dependency Clinical Supervisor (CDCS), Traditional Counselor, or an Administrator. With each level of counseling you choose, your degree requirements and internship hours will vary. As you seek a program that will meet your educational goal, consider online programs or distance learning if your local university doesn’t have a qualified program.
