Prospective substance abuse counselors in Florida have many options in terms of education and training.  You can choose to enter the field with a two-year associate’s degree or pursue a graduate level degree that will open up even more doors.  Remember that, when it comes to substance abuse counselor training in Florida, the more impressive your educational credentials, the more career opportunities you will have. Whatever training program you choose, you can expect to take courses in counseling skills, group counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and ethics, as well as general courses in psychology and human behavior.

In order to become certified as a substance abuse counselor in Florida, you will need to meet certain educational and training requirements and pass a written certification examination.  To achieve the lowest level of certification, Certified Associate Addiction Professional I, you do not need an academic degree.  However, you will have to demonstrate completion of 2000 hours of work experience in substance abuse counseling, 100 hours of direct supervision, and 150 hours of coursework in counseling related subjects.   To be certified as a Certified Associate Addiction Professional II, you must have an associate’s degree, 4000 hours of work experience, including 150 hours of direct supervision, and 270 hours of educational training in counseling.

The highest certification level, Certified Addiction Professional, requires a bachelor’s degree, 6000 hours of work experience, 300 hours of direct supervision, and 300 hours of counseling related education.
