Students following a substance abuse counselor curriculum can expect to take courses in neurochemistry and pharmacology; the dynamics of addiction; professional ethics; the addiction severity index; both individual and group counseling strategies and approaches, including effective intervention techniques, developing psychosocial substance abuse assessments and facilitation skills; function and recovery and self-awareness. Students are also be required to take supervised field training as part of a practicum requirement.

The State of Utah has a mission to deliver the highest quality education to its residents, taking into account the geographic and financial constraints of some of its residents, particularly in rural areas of Utah. As a result, Utah can boast that it has one of the most educated populations in the United States. One of its initiatives is the Utah Education Network (UEN), a consortium of public education partners, including the Utah System of Higher Education and its ten universities and colleges; the Utah State Office of Education, local school districts and the Utah Electronic High School and the state’s Library system. The UEN offers satellite courses that fulfill the educational requirements for licensure as a substance abuse counselor in the state of Utah.
