Tennessee Certified Nursing Assistant Training Programs

Certified Nursing Assistants are the backbone of assisted care and long-term facilities.  With 320 nursing homes in Tennessee (carepathways.com), the demand for Certified Nursing Assistants, or Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) as they are known in the state, shows no signs of slowing down.  As required by federal law, Tennessee ensures that anyone wanting to work as a CNA is qualified to do so.  Nurse aide candidates must complete state-approved training programs and pass a competency evaluation before they can practice.  Once these requirements are fulfilled, the state places the individual’s name in its registry of Certified Nurse Aides.  Tennessee CNAs average about $2,000 per month in earnings according to nursesgroup.com, depending on experience and location. This amount is in line with the median average Certified Nursing Assistant salary across the country of $24,383 (nursesgroup.com).

Certified Nurse Aides are in the forefront of patient care, proving essentials like personal care and emotional support.  To assure quality care, Tennessee requires that a nurse aide training program be at least 75 hours in length (health.state.tn.us).  Sixteen of those hours must be in the following subjects:

  • communication skills
  • infection control
  • resident rights and independence
  • safety and emergency procedures

The Tennessee CNA training program must also include other components as required by federal and state laws, such as basic nursing skills, mental health, personal care, restorative services, and social needs.  A clinical component is also mandatory.  Here, students practice the skills they have learned, five of which they will be tested during the skills portion of the competency examination.  Tennessee has no shortage of educational opportunities for nurse aides, as programs are offered in numerous locations including high schools, online schools, community colleges, technical and vocational schools, job corps, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers.  Certified Nursing Aides are well situated to advance their careers.  Many License Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses entered the health care profession as a CNA.

Through online programs, aspiring C.N.A.s in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Nashville's Baptist Hospital.
