Steps to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Tennessee

• Complete your high school education (or GED equivalent), focusing your courses as much as possible in the sciences (i.e. anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry)
• Take the ACT after graduation
• After researching the available Licensed Practical Nurse programs and determining which one is best suited for you, gain admittance to the online or campus-based Tennessee LPN program, and successfully complete it in the time frame expected (generally six (6) months to one (1) year)
•  You are then ready for the next step, which is examination and licensure.  Licensed Practical Nursing students in Tennessee are required to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) prior to applying for state licensure.  The examination application and complete packet of information is available only from the individual schools in Tennessee.  The cost to take the exam is ninety (90) dollars.  Results can be expected within seven to ten (7-10) business days and will be mailed to the address provided on your application.  Passing results indicate that you have achieved licensure status and you will be notified, again by mail, when your license is active. 
• Licensure must be maintained in accordance with the rules and regulations as established by the Board of Nursing.  Renewal occurs every two (2) years at a cost of sixty-five (65) dollars. While continuing education is not a requirement in Tennessee, those seeking renewal must meet competence requirements, including having practiced for the previous five (5) years prior to renewal.
