It is requirement to attend a medical assistant program in Tennessee to receive proper training. In order to attend a career college, it is vital to have completed high school and earned a diploma. When choosing a program to become a medical assistant, there are two options, including a one-year or two-year post secondary program. After successfully completing a one-year training program, graduates are given a certificate. If a graduate chooses to further their education and achieve the two-year program, they will then receive an associate’s degree in medical assisting.

Successfully attending and completing Tennessee medical assistant programs will prepare students for an entry-level position in medical clinics, hospitals and doctors’ offices. After completing a one-year program, students receive a diploma in medical assisting. The 12-month medical assisting diploma allows graduates to participate in both clinical and clerical work. The one-year program teaches students office skills, medical terminology, billing and insurance information, and professional orientation. The clinical aspects of the one-year training program include the human anatomy, physiology, diseases, phlebotomy, and pharmacology.

During a two-year medical assisting program, students will learn the same concepts as a one-year program; however, the topics discussed will be expanded upon and minor medical procedures will be preformed. During a two-year program students are often permitted to take part in internships to gain firsthand experience. After receiving the one-year diploma or completing the two-year program, students are then eligible to take the national Certified Medical Assistant exam (CMA).
