After completing a one or two-year program from a Tennessee medical assistant school, graduates can apply to take the national Certified Medical Exam. The exam is given by the American Association of Medical Assistants and is offered three times a year. Once graduates pass the exam they become a Certified Medical Assistant. This exam must be taken every 5 years for certification renewal. A Certified Medical Assistant has a less strenuous time finding a well paying career and a steady income than one who is not certified. Those who have completed training through medical assistant schools in Tennessee and gained work experience should find the exam relatively easy.

Continued Education

Once a medical assistant has become certified, there are other courses that can be taken to expand their knowledge and promote their career. Gaining knowledge in certain areas and expanding an expertise of a certain area can increase the income level of a medical assistant. Other courses to be considered after becoming certified include clinical and diagnostic procedures, lab techniques, and medical ethics. Extra courses involving office practices and record keeping are also helpful. Making the decision to further education in these areas beyond what has been taught in the one and two-year programs will increase the likeliness of a medical assistant’s career moving forward.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Assistants in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Nashville's Baptist Hospital.
