The first step in your educational journey to become a medical biller and coder in Tennessee is, of course, to graduate from high school and earn your diploma or GED equivalent. Then you will want to find one of many medical coding schools in Tennessee that covers basics of medical coding and billing and is recommended by the AAPC and/or AHIMA. Most programs are at least 70 credit hours long, and cover skills used by medical billers/coders, including solving insurance billing problems, filing claims manually using the CPT and ICD-9 manuals, how to complete insurance forms, and how to trace delinquent claims and use generic forms for billing.  In these courses, students are introduced to the CPT; specialty fields like anesthesia, surgery, pathology, laboratory and radiology; the ICD-9, and learn basic claims processes. Legal and ethical issues in documentation are also covered, as are evaluation and management services, HIPAA, Electronic Date Interchange (EDI), managed care systems, and other insurance ins and outs. Programs of this length and depth cost an average of $1500.

Once you have completed a training program through medical billing schools in Tennessee and earned a diploma, certificate, or degree, you must work for a suggested amount of time before sitting for any national certification exams. Training alone will help you to understand the concepts involved in medical coding/billing, but practical work experience is necessary in order to be able to pass certification tests.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Billing and Coding Professionals in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Nashville's Baptist Hospital.
