To gain a nursing informatics certificate to practice in Tennessee, individuals must first complete educational eligibility requirements. For instance, nurse informatics professionals must have a current registered nurse license, and two years or work experience practicing as a RN. Also, individuals must complete a baccalaureate degree program or higher level of formal education in nursing or a nursing-related field. A minimum of thirty hours of continuing education within the last three years is also required.
Lastly, certification guidelines demand that applicants fulfill practical requirements by completing one of the following options:
1) 2,000 hours of practical training in nurse informatics
2) 1,000 hours of practical training in nurse informatics + twelve academic credits in a graduate nurse informatics program
3) graduation from a nurse informatics graduate program, that includes 200 hours of supervised practical training. After all education requirements have been fulfilled, individuals will need to take a national competency examination and get Tennessee nursing informatics certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Contact the ANCC and request an “Informatics Nursing Certification Application.” Upon completing the application, along with an initial certification fee (ANA members-$270, ANI members-$340, non-members-$390), the ANCC will review the application for approval. If approved, applicants will go on to take the competency examination. Once examination is passed, a nursing informatics certificate will be granted to practice in Tennessee.
