The Tennessee State Board of Nursing requires that registered nurses show competence in the field. Earning five continuing education credit hours is one way nurses can show competence in the field. Other areas include, but are not limited to a satisfactory evaluation from an employer, initial or continuing national certification, educating nursing students at a Board approved school, publishing an article in a peer-reviewed nursing journal, etc. For a complete list of items that are acceptable for establishing competency check out the Board’s website at http://health.state.tn.us. In addition to the State of Tennessee’s requirements, national certification organizations, such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, have additional continuing education requirements.
