How to Become a Surgical Tech in Tennessee - TN

The demand for skilled surgical technologists in Tennessee is growing steadily every year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  Currently, with 3,620 surgical techs employed, Tennessee has the highest concentration of Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) per capita in the United States.  The BLS projects that figure to exceed 4,800 by the year 2016, so pursuing a career as a Surgical Technologist in Tennessee has never been more opportunistic.

Steps to becoming a Surgical Technologist in Tennessee

  1. Apply and gain admission to a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educations Programs (CAAHEP.org) accredited school in Tennessee.  For specific admission guidelines, refer to the admissions office of the school that is of interest to you.
  2. Successfully complete the education and training requirements for the Surgical Technologist degree from the accredited institution.  Depending on the school in Tennessee, training programs range between 9 and 24 months in duration.
  3. Submit application for certification to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA.org).  In addition to acquiring a degree from a CAAHEP school to become NBSTSA certification eligible, applicants can meet the criteria for eligibility in one of the following ways: accumulate 7+ years of Surgical Technologist related work experience or have participated in an accredited two-year on-the-job training program at a hospital.
  4. Upon passing the certification examination, applicants are designated as Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in the state of Tennessee.
