How to Become an EKG Tech in Texas - TX

EKG (Electrocardiograph) Technicians work in hospitals, doctor's offices, outpatient centers, and clinics. They perform health diagnostic tests and treatments to help doctors assess possible cardiovascular and pulmonary problems in patients. In an EKG, electrical impulses are transmitted by the heart and measured to assess cardiovascular function. The McAllen/Edinburg/Mission metropolitan area in Texas is the highest-paying metropolitan area of all the United States in which EKG Technicians can work. Although this area employs just 50 EKG technicians, they make an annual mean wage of $70,690 (2008). This represents a 68% increase over the mean annual national salary for EKG technicians.

Texas EKG Technican Certification

  1. If you're interested in becoming an EKG technician, first assess your personality characteristics and traits. You should possess a high degree of flexibility, kindness, a positive attitude, good physical stamina, discretion, good judgment, accuracy, and neatness to be a successful EKG technician.
  2. After high school graduation, enroll in a Texas EKG technician certification program. Graduate and receive a diploma or certificate and will be eligible for entry-level EKG tech positions in the state of Texas.
  3. EKG technicians do not have to be licensed in order to work in the state of Texas. However, national certification opens up more job opportunities and possibly higher wages than those earned by non-certified EKG techs. Check with your school or your employer/potential employer to see which of the certification organizations they favor.
  4. The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) offers a certification exam credentialing National Certified ECG Technicians (NCET). This test costs $90 for students and $135 for everyone else. For more information, go to www.ncctinc.com.
  5. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) offers EKG Technician certification as well. While they do require you to join their organization and pay a membership fee, the fee to take their certification test is is  $55. Exam results are mailed to you six to eight weeks after taking the test. Go to www.aspt.org for more information.
  6. Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) offers exams that qualify you as a Certified Cardiograph Technician (CCT). These exams are computerized and are given by  Pearson VUE testing centers. In Texas, these centers can be found in Abilene, Austin, and San Antonio.  Go to  www.cci-online.org for information on costs and how to register for this exam, which costs $160 to take.
