How to Become a Gerontologist in Texas - TX

The US census reports that the population of individuals age 65 and older is growing fastest in the southwestern states, such as Texas.  In the most recent census reporting period, in Texas, the number of people age 65 and older grew by 20%.  This growth provides expanding opportunities in the area of gerontology.  Gerontology is a multidisciplinary area that refers to the study of aging processes, including from a biological, sociological, and psychological perspective.  Some careers specific to this field of study may include nursing home administration, developing recreational programs for seniors, providing direct care to the elderly, and counseling patients and their families on care giving, or financial and estate planning.

In order to become a gerontologist in the state of Texas, one must first make the commitment to want to better the quality of life for an aging population.  Working with this population often requires a special amount of care and patience, but also gives a tremendous amount of reward and satisfaction.

Once this decision is made, one must choose a path to a career in gerontology that suits him/her. Will it be a career in nursing with a focus on the needs of the aging? Will it be a focus on gerontology in order to work for an agency such as the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.  Perhaps you’re more interested in administrative work and wish to pursue a degree in long term care and nursing home administration?  This decision will guide the educational plan of the student.  As a rule, the higher the level of education, the better opportunity the gerontology professional will have for advancement.
