How to Become a Medical Technician in Texas

In most cases medical technicians will work closely with a Physician, Technologist or Pathologist.  Besides collecting blood and performing analysis, other tasks taught through Texas medical technician schools are as follows:

  • Analyze laboratory samples while checking accuracy.
  • Check blood samples for chemical content.
  • Use microscopic procedures to study blood samples.
  • Analyze body fluids for chemical analysis.
  • Perform chemical research for microbiologist or biochemist.
  • Perform a variety of tests on microorganisms.
  • Data entry of clinical results and medical tests.
  • Manage equipment used in analysis.
  • Provide feedback to researchers, physicians and family regarding test results.
  • Ensure accuracy of tests by quality assurance monitoring.
  • Coordinate procedures, policies and activities with staff.
  • Stay up to date in the latest infections and procedures.
  • Preparation of serums and vaccines.
  • Proficient in spreadsheets, word processing and desktop publishing.

Medical Technicians job duties are very important as they specifically deal with patients’ diagnosis and treatment therefore; detailed accuracy is of utmost importance.  They will also work a variety of shifts that may consist of weekends, holidays, split-shifts, nights and stand-by on call.

Steps to Become a Medical Technician in Texas

To become a Medical Technician in the state of Texas, it is not required that you have a state license.  However, you will need to have the correct education and professional credentials to be employed as a medical technician in Texas. 

When searching for employment in Texas, you will find that most employers are searching for a candidate that has eligibility certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or already has their certification. 

The following is a list of steps for becoming certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

  1. Earn 60 college semester hours from an accredited school or an Associates Degree. (Plus)
  2. National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited program completion within the last five years a (Or)
  3. Six semester hours of chemistry or biology and a Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) certification.  (Or)
  4. U.S. Military notarized documentation of medical lab training with fifty weeks and six hours of biology or chemistry.  (Or)
  5. Three years of full time clinical lab experience in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, clinical microscopy and immunology along with six college semester hours of chemistry and biology, all within Canada or US

The cost of the exam is $185.00 and the above will enable you to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for Medical Laboratory Technician exam.
