Skills Taught Through Texas Medical Technician Training Programs

Some of the skills and knowledge needed for the medical technician are as follows:

  • General office: accounting software, billing knowledge, spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Critical Thinking: Being able to reason and identify strengths or weaknesses in alternative solutions, approaches or conclusions to issues.

  • Listening:  You have to listen intently and understanding key points being made, asking the appropriate questions and being considerate by not interrupting at the wrong times.
  • Decisions:  Choosing the right decision as it’s related to benefits and costs along with actions and choosing the most appropriate one.
  • Science:  Using the latest rules, methods and procedures to solve problems.
  • Monitoring and Quality Control:  Checking your performance on a regular basis and other staff you may be responsible for.  Evaluate processes to ensure performance and quality.
  • Communication:  Being able to convey to others in a simple, yet understanding way is imperative in this industry.  You must be able to handle patients, lab staff and other hospital personnel.

Continuing Education for Medical Technicians in Texas

Medical Technicians in the state of Texas are should continue their education to stay up to date on the latest trends, technology and industry standards.  You can obtain credits by taking courses through Texas medial technician training programs necessary to maintaining state licensure.

Since July 2009 the following have been added to some curriculum courses:
Routine Venipuncture, 1.5 hours of continuing education.
Laboratory Ergonomics, 1 hour of continuing education.
Parasitology Question Bank, 1.5 hours of continuing education
The Disappearing Antibody: A Case Study, 2.0 hours of continuing education.
Emerging Cardiovascular Risk Markers, 1.5 hours of continuing education.

As you can see, things change quite often for continuing education in this industry and it is suggested that you continue to pay close attention to the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board for the latest updates. 

The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board does recognize the above education meets the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) for national licensure requirements.

Re-Certification Requirements:

If you want to be recognized as a leading expert in the medical technician industry, it is highly recommended to renew your national license or certification every two years.  As mentioned above, it is important to continue your education and stay abreast of the latest courses, technologies and industry standards.  This is not something that is mandatory; however, if you want to continue to work in this industry you will need it to be successful. 

Right now there are two recognized programs that offer assistance in maintaining your professional certification.  They are as follows:

Certification Maintenance Program (CMP): 
This drills down on the exact courses, number of hour’s needed, total credits, direction and step-by-step guide for re-certification purposes.

Verification of Certification
This program is certainly not mandatory but will give you a chance to showcase your efforts, talents and accomplishments by having your certification public.  It would make it much easier for future employers to be able to find your certified category, your certification number and the date of your license.  There is a fee for this type of certification available through the National Student Clearinghouse or NSC.
