Ultrasound Technician Certification Exams
Ultrasound technician certification is required to practice in this field. To become board certified through the American Registry for
Diagnostic Sonography (ARDMS), it is required to pass three exams following graduation from a sonography program: physics abdomen, and obstetrics/pelvis. For individuals who wish to specialize in echo, vascular, breast or neonatal, there are specific board exams for these specialties. Passing any additional board exams allow sonographers to perform other specific scans and may make them eligible for pay increases. A sonography program provides adequate preparation for the board exams; however, it is recommended that graduates study for a few weeks prior to taking them in order to review all class materials. These exams can be quite costly, averaging around $200 per exam ($600 for all three) which is why studying to increase the chances of passing them the first time is important.
Specialty Credential Exams
There are some extra credentials a sonographer can receive in order to specialize in a particular area. These can include: neonatal, cardiac, ophthalmologic (including the eye, brain, and surrounding areas), and vascular (blood vessels). Only two of these specialties require additional credentials or board exams: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). To earn either of these credentials, additional coursework is not required but rather a set number of examinations which are taken while “on the job”. In addition to the examinations, there are additional board exams required to have licensure in these specialty areas.Ultrasound Tech Continuing Education Requirements
To maintain a sonography license, 30 continuing education units must be completed every three years. Credits are earned by attending conferences, completing online recertification credits, or attending classes to further one’s understanding in the field. It is also essential for sonographers to maintain their CPR license. An annual fee is also required.Learn more about ultrasound technician schools.
