In order to practice as an ultrasound technician, typically an associate’s degree in sonography is required, along with passing the necessary board exams after graduation. While bachelor’s programs are available in this field, traditionally only an associate’s degree is required. There are also one-year certificate programs that are acceptable by some employers. The most important thing is having the necessary education to successfully pass the required board exams.

Ultrasound technicians can earn their training at community colleges, technical schools, hospitals, and universities. While some Ultrasound Tech Degreesprograms prefer those with a science or health care background, others do not have these requirements.

Along with the education, another requirement is passing a certain number of competency exams in each area. For instance, there are a certain number of abdomen competency exams required and a certain number of vascular exams.

Prerequisites Required for an Ultrasound Tech Degree

A typical sonography program has several requirements for entry into the program. In order to apply to the program, the required courses almost always include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and oftentimes introduction to physics and college algebra. Being CPR certified is also a requirement to enter a program along with having standard vaccines if you have not received them already.

Having earned a previous degree or previous health care work experience is definitely a plus for admission into a program but not necessarily a requirement. The school usually looks to accept students who have had exemplary grades in previous college programs too.

Many ultrasound tech degree programs also require an interview prior to acceptance. In these interviews the school is looking for individuals who have enthusiasm and a motivation to succeed, along with good interpersonal and communication skills.

Ultrasound Tech Courses

As mentioned before, typical prerequisite courses before you are able to begin an ultrasound technician degree include: Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Introduction to Physics, College Algebra, and Trigonometry

. In terms of actual courses within a sonography program, these of course can vary by the school but typically they are broken down by the ultrasound specialty. For example, you may start with a class specific to ultrasound of the abdomen and then move on to one specific to ultrasound of the pelvis, followed by a class on vascular sonography. Each area of sonography is typically put into a separate class so that the students are able to understand and explore these areas in depth. Other courses commonly included are patient care and medical ethics.
