Educational preparation for a career in nursing can begin early in life. High school courses that emphasize mathematics and science will prove beneficial. Some high schools even offer vocational programs that allow students to explore healthcare careers. Volunteering at local hospitals or health care facilities will also provide valuable career preparation and experience.
Once a high school diploma or GED has been obtained, aspiring licensed practical nurses should apply to either accredited online nursing programs or campus based LPN schools in Utah offering accredited programs. These are mostly offered through technical and vocational schools and community and junior colleges. LPN programs typically take two years to complete.
LPN education programs combine classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice to provide students with the most vital nursing education, preparation, and experience. Classroom instruction may include courses in the following
- Nutrition
- Child Growth and Development
- Physical Education
- Sciences – Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry and Physiology
- Medical-Surgical Nursing
- Obstetrics Nursing
In addition, LPN students will need to be certified in CPR and First Aid. Nursing specializations will require additional courses and certifications.
LPNs in Utah must also meet the following requirements when applying for a license renewal every two years:
- 30 contact hours
- 15 contact hours and 200 practical hours
- 400 practical hours
