Becoming a Medical Tech in Utah

Utah currently only requires that its Medical Technicians be certified in a national level, with no other state qualifications to meet. To become certified on a national level, interested persons will need to meet the national requirement of earning an associate degree in Medical Technology and passing the national certification exam. The associate degree must be obtained before one is allowed to sit for the exam. The proper procedure for becoming nationally certified is outlined below.

  • Candidates will attend one of the accredited Utah medical technician schools offering a clinical science program. This program will include a practicum or clinical rotation and be recognized by the American Society of for Clinical Pathologists.
  • Upon completion of the program, students should receive a degree at the associate level or higher.
  • Interested parties can apply to take the national exam by requesting an application from the ASCP. The application should be filled out in full and returned to be reviewed. Once the application is reviewed and all requested paperwork has been submitted, the candidate may sit for the exam.
  • Once the exam is completed, individuals who receive passing scores will be considered certified Medical Technicians and will be able to put the initials “MT” after their name.
  • Those who become certified will periodically contact the Utah Division of Occupational Professional Licensing in order to keep up to date on the licensing requirements of the Medical Technician. This is a necessary step due to the fact that the medical field is constantly updating their standards in all areas of the country.
