By Susan Mathis, allied health world contributing writerPublished: January 8th, 2010
There are approximately 600 licensed respiratory care practitioners in Utah. Positions for respiratory therapists in Utah seem to be concentrated in larger cities, such as Provo and Salt Lake City. Respiratory therapists in Utah earn an average of $45,000 annually, which is comparable to the average salary for their counterparts in other states.
Employers of respiratory care practitioners within the state of Utah include Alta View Hospital in Sandy, Beaver Valley Hospital in Beaver, Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Wasatch County Hospital in Heber City, and Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City, just to name a few.
Education Required for Respiratory Therapists in the State of Utah
In order to become a licensed respiratory care practitioner in Utah, graduates must complete programs offered by Utah respiratory therapy schools accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Depending upon the program and school you choose, you will either graduate with an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in respiratory care, taking from two to four years to complete.
While the state of Utah does not require continuing education courses in order to maintain a license as a respiratory care practitioner, many respiratory therapists become members of organizations such as the national American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) or the state's Utah Society for Respiratory Care (USRC). These organizations recommend, require for members, and provide approved continuing education courses for those who wish to participate.
