Vermont Certified Nurse Assistant Training Programs

The State of Vermont and Vermont’s State Board of Nursing have approved a number of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) schools that, upon successfully completing the course of training, enable the student to be eligible to be licensed and work as a Licensed Nurse Assistant (LNA).  CNAs and LNAs are valuable members of the healthcare team, working directly with the patients under direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

Students in Vermont are required to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Nursing assistant education programs in Vermont are a minimum of 75 hours and prepare the student to care for patients in a number of areas. Some of the skills that will be covered as part of the program will include helping a patient with mobility and ambulation, including assisting someone using a cane, a walker, application of a gait belt, and proper use of a wheelchair. Proper bed making will also be covered, as well as supporting patients and transferring them from a bed to a wheelchair or a chair. Other areas: Communication with patients both verbal and non-verbal, and with cognitive impairments, infection control procedures; nutrition and feeding; catheter care; toileting; measuring vital signs; personal care, such as bathing and administering backrubs; oral care, such as brushing teeth, denture care and using a swab and safety protocols. Students will learn the Heimlich maneuver and how to administer CPR correctly according to the latest guidelines.
