At the end of the course, the candidate has to earn a certain number of hours (usually a minimum of 160 hours) at a local clinic or hospital, applying everything they have learned in the course. This is usually in the form of an externship. This often tests how well the candidate responds in a tense environment and how they make important decisions.
The candidate must then apply for the CMA (AAMA) exam. As of April 2009, the exam is available to take throughout the year. The candidate must pay the application fee and schedule a date to take the exam. Candidates who have studied in a Vermont medical assistant school that is accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES have to pay a fee of $125 to apply for the exam. All others have to pay $ 250. The most important part of this program is the ability of the candidate to retain everything they have learnt. Studying and completing your education through medical assistant schools in Vermont will be beneficial as the exam theoretically tests the candidate and measures their responses in real life situations.
