The state of Vermont mandates that all nuclear medicine technologists employed within the state have received formal education. In order to obtain a state license, one has to graduate from one of the number of nuclear medicine technologist schools in Vermont or in the United States. The state Board of Radiology has listed schools which are approved by the board, the NMTCB or ARRT. A nuclear medicine technology curriculum typically takes a minimum of a year to a maximum of four years to complete. Graduates hold a certificate, or an associate degree or a bachelor degree.

Many nuclear medicine technology schools have prerequisites that include biology, math, physics and social studies, before allowing a student entrance to their nuclear medicine technology educational program. Courses included in the majority of nuclear medicine technologist schools in Vermont will cover topics such as the basic sciences and humanities, mathematics, computers, chemistry, immunology, and pathology. Besides classroom work, a nuclear medicine educational program will include hands-on, clinical experience where students obtain real, true-to-life patient care experience. Institutions in Vermont where students may take their internships include Fletcher Allen Health Care, Pharma Logic LTD, Rutland Regional Medical Center, Central Vermont Medical Center and Southwestern Vermont Health Care. Additionally, medical facilities outside of Vermont, such as those in New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts, are also used by students interested in gaining clinical experience.
