There are several steps involved in becoming a radiology technician in Vermont:

  1. Get a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Gain acceptance into a Vermont radiology tech training program. The program must be accredited through an accrediting agency such as, Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Look at colleges in Bennington, Burlington and Rutland that offer national recognized radiology programs. All programs are two-years in length and have individual criteria for student admission.

  3. After selecting a formal radiology program, research which course prerequisites are required for entrance. Next, enroll in and successfully complete prerequisite education classes. Studies can expect general English, algebra, anatomy and physiology coursework.
  4. In order to graduate from a Vermont radiology tech training program, students must show competency in classroom lessons, laboratory exercises, clinical procedures and sometimes, patient care.
  5. Upon graduation, submit an application for certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). Along with submitting an application, radiology technicians must sit for and pass a formal examination administered by the ARRT or NMTCB. Documentation proving the completion of a radiology program is also mandated. If all requirements are met the title of registered technician (RT) is granted.
  6. The next step is to apply for a state license in Vermont. Contact the Vermont Board of Radiology Technology to obtain an application. The application will request that radiology technicians show evidence of formal education training and certification. If the application is approved, a license will be issued to professionally practice in Vermont.
